Peter James: Stop Them Dead, a Roy Grace Novel, Book

Stop Them Dead, the recent thriller from acclaimed crime writer and branch patron Peter James, exposes the ruthless greed of the puppy trade. To ensure an authentic portrayal, Peter worked closely with our Special Operations Unit (SOU), gaining vital insights into the dark world of illegal breeding and providing readers with essential advice on how to avoid being duped by rogue dealers.

When a young farmer is left for dead after confronting midnight intruders, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace discovers the chilling truth: he’s stumbled into a brutal nationwide crime wave where illegal dog trading is more lucrative, and more lethal, than drugs.

The novel features a character named in honour of Kirsty Withnall, an SOU Case Officer who dedicated her life to animal welfare. Kirsty spoke to Peter at length about her work, giving him an insight into some of the illegal puppy trade cases which she and her colleagues have worked on. Kirsty was an internationally renowned investigator, famous for exposing cross-border dog fighting and her relentless pursuit of justice for all animals. Her passion, commitment, and bravery will be deeply missed.

RIP Kirsty Withnall (1976–2024).
